Historic Lewes has over a dozen different volunteer opportunities, from archival research to living history interpretation, and a whole lot more in between! Every opportunity is coordinated by a Historic Lewes staff member whose team you can join and learn the ropes.
See yourself serving 18th-century hot chocolate in the Lewistown Coffee-House, or interpreting the life of a 19th century maritime first responder? How about selling antiques and collectibles at the Antique Shop, or staffing our campus festivals? We have something for everyone, and flexibility is our middle name! Your schedule is our schedule. Curious yet? We hope so!

“Historic Lewes offers history buffs many opportunities to “find their niche” in our Lewes volunteer family. I joined the organization after I took the
Legends tour as a guest in the Fall of 2021. My first experience was working on a special Lewes-Cape May Ferry project for the museum archives. Soon I was recruited into wearing colonial garb and serving as a docent for several of the historic houses in Lewes. Later, I became a regular licensed barkeep in the Sussex Tavern serving up stories and colonial cocktails, performed in several Tavern Talks performances, learned and led 5 different walking tours and helped out with most special events on the main campus. This Fall I will join the ranks of lecturers in our Night at the Museum series.
One of the best parts of being a volunteer is the ability to switch hats and learn new things every day you come to “work”. Historic Lewes has a well trained and friendly staff to guide every volunteer to find their full potential and area of interest in both public facing and/or behind the scenes support. As a result, there is room and training available for everyone to challenge their personal comfort level and find their passion!”

“As a retired educator, I love having the opportunity to teach visitors a little about our amazing town and its role in history. My favorite spot is the Lewes Coffee House, a remarkable reproduction of a colonial period coffee house where I get to chat with and serve coffee, tea or hot chocolate to curious and thirsty guests. Volunteering for the historical society is a lovely way to learn about Lewes history, while keeping busy and making new friends.”
