Colonial Delaware, as a Maritime State, strategically situated at the entrance to Delaware Bay with long shores along the Atlantic Ocean and the Delaware River, was directly connected to events occurring on these waters in our wars for independence. Delawareans were aware of the dangers and largely opposed these wars, but with our sovereignty and the economic health of the United States in jeopardy, Delawareans participated fully, including in the controversial but economically lucrative and hence popular, patriotic privateering. Where would we have been without these privateers?
