Submitted by Andrew J. Lyter, Executive Director

As a maritime historian, I have always felt it necessary to experience at least some of the maritime hardships that I research. Without these personal experiences, I fear that my writing and comprehension of the world afloat would be lacking. To that end I have had the distinct fortune to work as a volunteer crew member aboard the Kalmar Nyckel.  This well-known vessel, a recreation of the first ship to bring Swedish settlers to found New Sweden in 1638, also serves as the state ship of Delaware and a floating educational ambassador. Annually, I strive to go on at least one voyage, sailing to Greenport, Long Island this summer.  During these voyages a team of trained volunteer crew works alongside professional ship’s officers in a traditional watch system, sailing the ship 24-7.
Being a student of history, I keep a personal journal on each of my voyages, jotting down anecdotes and noteworthy experiences. I want to share a few pages from this voyage in order to provide a snapshot of my experiences.

The Flip Book above contains a few pages from the journal that Andrew kept during the voyage.. You can expand the flip book to full screen by clicking on the square icon located between the "print" and "information" icons in the lower right corner of the Flip Book box. Once open you can click on the right and left arrows to page through the book or you can click on a page and drag it to flip to the next page.
Feel free to X out of the banner ad at the bottom of the book.

Also included are 3 images and 1 video.
