The Lewes Historical Society depends on volunteers to help keep the Society open and active. The Society has been nationally recognized for its contributions to historic preservation and history research and is visited each by visitors from all over Delaware and the United States. The Historical Society's Library & Archives seeks persons interested in history to assist on a variety of projects. Some current projects include making protective enclosures for damaged books and pamphlets, assisting reference staff with written inquiries, preservation photocopying, labeling collection materials, card catalog maintenance, and collections maintenance. Training will be provided and an attempt will be made to match volunteer interests with tasks. For volunteers with an interest in artifacts, this position offers the opportunity to research objects in our Museum collections, and work on data entry including changes to and completion of scholarly records in order to provide the best possible access. Volunteers may also work with the Curator to inventory and catalogue collections. This will involve handling objects, and record keeping. Further research may be needed on some artifacts that may be conducted by volunteers on-site at the Historical Society's library or at off-site resources. Please call 302-645-7670 to find out more. For the volunteer with teaching experience, and an enjoyment of working with diverse audiences, positions are available. Possibilities include conducting walking tours, developing adult and family audiences, and assisting Historical Society educators in afterschool programs and seasonal family festivals. In the past, unique programs have been developed with volunteers who have a special interest and commitment to a project if it compliments the Society's mission. Helping to interpret our 12 historic house museums in the heart of Lewes is a rewarding experience. Meeting wonderful visitors from all over the state, nation and world and having the satisfaction of sharing Lewes' rich history with them is time well spent. Docents will develop and lead tours for adults and help the Historical Society build and foster audiences. A full training period is provided for those interested in becoming a docent and includes workshops on Lewes history, public speaking, and interactive teaching techniques. Docents are asked to contribute ½ day a week. Positions are available weekdays and weekends. Docents also assist at the Christmas Tour of Lewes by helping to staff our historic houses for the day. The Society's Craft Fair is one of the best known on the East Coast and regularly attracts the best craftspeople from Maine to Florida and Delaware to Tennessee. Being a part of the event is an exciting opportunity to learn more about yoru favorite craftsperson or artisan. The oldest Society event, the Antique Show is held the first Saturday of August. Respected antique dealers from throughout the Middle Atlantic bring quality furnishings, rugs, paintings, books, and other antique pieces to Lewes in one of the most looked forward to events in town. The Grounds Crew is charged with maintaining the beautiful open space and colonial feel of the Lewes Historical Society Grounds. From the Complex to the Cannonball House, the Grounds Crew works to make sure that all plantings are appropriate to the period and atmosphere interpreted (such as at the Doctor's Office and the Rabbit's Ferry House) and that all plants and trees are native to Delaware. The Grounds Crew has gained the Society national recognition through Lewes' involvement in the "America In Bloom" Competition; the Society was recognized for "the beautiful grounds and preserved atmosphere of old Lewes." From the Winterthur Series and Delaware Silver to Delaware beekeeping and the wreck of DeBraak, the Society's Speaker Series is a much anticipated program each and every year. The meetings are well attended with an average monthly attendance of 100. There are opportunities available to hep line up speakers (arrangements are generally made a year in advance), help set-up refreshments and seating, or to host a speaker overnight.
