This performance looks at the effect of the American Revolution on Lewestown from the viewpoint of the British sympathizers. Sussex County and Lewes were a hotbed of Tories and Loyalists in 1777 and revered pilots made the hard decision to help navigate the English ships up and down the Delaware Bay and River. Mrs. Hedgecock, the lighthouse keeper entertained Tories at Cape Henlopen, and then on November 17th, William Adair made an entry in his diary: “Lighthouse Burning.” This event darkened the lighthouse for seven long years.
