Lewes History: The Journal of the Lewes Historical Society2020 journal cover sm2023 Volume XXVI

Lewes History is the official journal of the Lewes Historical Society issued annually in December. Begun in 1998, it publishes well-researched scholarly and popular articles that enhance understanding not only of Lewes’ heritage but also of the surrounding region and Delaware in general. Written by specialists and nonspecialists alike in a professional tone for an educated audience, articles are illustrated with images from the LHS collection or other sources.

Lewes History: The Journal of the Lewes Historical Society
2022 Special Issue - 60th Anniversary

2020 journal cover sm

In When Menhaden Was King, author Thomas Elton Brown, Ph.D. describes Hazel Brittingham as “a Lewes native who has a thorough knowledge of Lewes history.” He attributes the theme of the book’s final chapter, “The Historic Charm of Lewes Emerges,” to Hazel, crediting her with an interpretation that the fish factories made Lewes what it is today, “a delightful tourist destination.”

It is therefore appropriate that Hazel Brittingham is celebrated in the 60th Anniversary Special Issue.  Her contribution to the Journal is unmet; over the years she contributed thirty-three articles to the publication, was a member of the journal’s founding editorial board, and a charter member of the Society.
