Lunch & Learn: “The History of Saint Georges AME Church"

The next Lewes Lunch & Learn program will be held on Friday, February 17, at noon at Saint Georges AME Church at 317 Park Avenue in Lewes.  This is an alternative location for the Lunch & Learn program; they are otherwise held at Hotel Rodney.  Reverend Deborah McCaffity will present, “The History of Saint Georges AME Church".

Pastor of St. George AME Church, Reverend Doctor Deborah A. McCaffity will speak on the church’s birth, its history in first town in the first state, and its continued presence and impact in the community.  While placing the largely African American congregation into the larger context of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Lewes St. George AME Church celebrated its 200th year of existence.

Reverend Doctor Deborah A. McCaffity has her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, and a Masters of Divinity and Doctorate of Ministry.  Before becoming the pastor of Saint Georges in Lewes in June 2014, she also pastored in lower Manhattan, and Harlem NYC.  She has previously served as the Executive Director of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation for the AME Church, providing social service programs, and assisting in construction of over 200 units of affordable housing and rehabilitation of over 500 houses.

The Lewes Historical Society hosts a Lewes Lunch & Learn series, which includes various topics relating to the history of Lewes and surrounding area. This series is led by local history buffs, heritage area experts, and museum professionals. Lectures take place on announced dates. These events are free and open to the public.  Space is limited.  Seating is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
