Lewes Lunch & Learn March 13

The next Lewes Lunch & Learn is on Friday, March 13, as Lana Browne presents "A Story of Lewes through a Woman’s Eyes.”

From the early founding of Lewes, up through 1961 and the founding of The Lewes Historical Society, the lives, activities, and contributions of local women in the "First Town in the First State" have played a crucial role in the development of the town's history. Speaker Lana Browne shares the varied trials and tribulations faced by Lewes town-women in different eras including, the Revolutionary War in the 18th century, to the War of 1812 in the 19th century, up through the Menhaden Fishing Industry in the 1960s. Hear the stories of matriarchs alongside lesser known feminine personages of Lewes's past.

Speaker Lana Browne has always been interested in American history and teaching.  She holds degrees in education from Wittenberg University and Miami University (Ohio) with concentrations in the social sciences.  She also has postgraduate work in Educational Administration.  After teaching elementary school for several years, she moved on to higher education.  She advised student services at the college level for over 25 years.  Her lifelong interests include piano, needlework and reading.

Throughout the years she has enjoyed the living in and discovering the history of more than 12 different towns in eight states.  This interest continued when she and her husband retired to Sussex County almost 10 years ago.  Now she can devote even more time to learning about and teaching the amazing story of Lewes to Historical Society visitors.

The Lewes Historical Society hosts a series of presentations called “Lewes Lunch & Learns,” which include various topics relating to the history of Lewes and surrounding area. This series is sponsored by Hotel Rodney and led by local history buffs, heritage area experts, and museum professionals. Lectures take place the second Friday of each month, through May, in the downstairs meeting room of the Hotel Rodney at the corner of Second and Market Streets. The program begins at noon; doors open at 11:30am. Space is limited.  Seating is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. These events are free and open to the public.  You may bring a brown bag lunch or select from a set $10 menu provided by the Rose & Crown. A portion of the lunch proceeds will be donated to The Lewes Historical Society.

The $10 lunch option on March 13 will be a Fish Sandwich and a Peanut Butter Cookie. If you plan to order lunch, please email [email protected] with your name and number in your party.
