A Lewes Historical Society Recent Acquisition: Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse Lantern

Bob Savage -- a Cape Henlopen High School graduate, resident of Milford and descendant of Floyd Savage, a keeper of Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse off Lewes's coast -- donated this circa 1908 lantern from the lighthouse to the Society on Friday, October 4, 2013. This lantern would have been fueled by oil and provided the light that would have been visible for nearly 18 miles for mariners traveling to or near the Delaware Capes. Further research will be done to find out more about this lantern that was saved by Bob's grandfather Floyd when orders came to depose of this lantern (and two back-ups like it) when new electric ones arrived to replace it.

Pictured clockwise from lower left with the lantern are Bob Savage of Milford (Grandson of Floyd B. Savage), Cindy Savage of Milford (Bob Savage's Wife), Mike DiPaolo (Lewes Historical Society Executive Director), Melissa Mitchell of Lewes (Great Granddaughter of Floyd B. Savage), and Cody Mitchell of Lewes (Great Great Grandson of Floyd B. Savage).

If you or someone you know has materials relating to Lewes and you would be willing to donate them or would like to discuss a possible donation, please contact the Society at 302-645-7670.
