With its wealth of historical sites, museums, unique shops, restaurants and pristine beaches, Lewes is an exciting destination for craft buyers and visitors alike.  The Lewes Fall Craft Fair is well known for the exceptional quality of the craftspeople, including new and returning artists from across Delmarva and the Eastern Shore. This year, there will be over 60 talented artisans exhibiting a variety of media ranging from metalwork to woodworking, including beautiful pottery by 2016 Fall Craft Fair Featured Artist, Jeff Watson.

Jeff Watson took his first pottery class 30 years ago and has been hooked since. The pots he makes are functional, made on a wheel or from slabs, and are of stoneware or porcelain.  “Forming pots is the part of the process that I most enjoy -- actually feeling the clay slide through my hands when I throw, the pot taking shape from the pressure and gestures of my hand,” says Jeff.  He has been a student and teacher at Jill Hinckley’s studio in Washington, DC, and attended numerous workshops given by renowned potters including Michael Simon, Ruthanne Tudball, Mark Shapiro, Randy Johnston, Hayne Bayless, Nick Joerling, and Kevin Crowe.  Jeff also practices salt firing, which dates back to 15th Century Germany when potters discovered that throwing quantities of common salt in the kiln when it reached high temperatures caused a chemical reaction with the clay, forming an attractive natural glaze.  Jeff states, “I’m always amazed with how the medium can be used in so many applications, as well as the abundance of opportunities for creative expression that it presents--limited only by the human imagination.”

Jeff sells his work at craft shows throughout the mid-Atlantic region.  His work can also be found in galleries and shops on the Eastern Shore including the Stepping Stone in Lewes, and the Rehoboth Art League in Rehoboth Beach, and in Metro DC, at Terasol Artisan Gallery and Café.  He looks forward to displaying and selling his work as the 2016 Featured Artist at The Lewes Historical Society’s Fall Craft Fair on October 29.

Admission will be $5.00 per person, children under 12 are free. Proceeds from this event will benefit educational and preservation programs at The Lewes Historical Society. For more details about the Fall Craft Fair or for more information on The Lewes Historical Society, contact 302-645-7670.
