Elizabeth Harrington Macdonald (EHM) was a prominent female Delaware artist of the 20th century and was an avid avocational historian. Her area of interest lay in Lewes' maritime past and she devoted years of research constructing lists and specifications of Lewes-built sailing vessels of the 1700s and 1800s. She also gathered information on Lewes-born seamen of the 1800s based on applications for sea protection against impressment. Both these subjects drew heavily on work at the National Archives. EHM also worked with the Pilots' Association for the Bay & River Delaware in building inventories of pilot boats, their crews and time periods from the 1700s and 1800s. Some vessels built at or near Bethel, Delaware are also listed as an area in that vicinity is known as Lewisville and were incidentally included. The collection is composed of photocopies of originals from the National Archives as well as EHM's handwritten notes on Lewes-built sailing vessels dating up to the late 1990s.
