A "Behind the Scenes" look at the Archives
Submitted by Denise Clemons, LHS Archivist

This garment was one of several dresses and other outfits that had been stored in a closet of the Burton Ingram House. After an inventory of the home late last year, these were relocated to the Archives’ climate-controlled environment to be examined for condition and restoration requirements. The outfit is called a walking dress and the gigot or mutton chop sleeves date it to the late 1800s. The top is elaborately decorated with jet beading and crimson silk trim. Laurie Roshfeld, an LHS volunteer, is an accomplished seamstress who offered to try and stabilize the skirt with some hidden repairs and a new waistband. Once campus reopens, we hope to place this elegant piece on display in one of the bedrooms in the Burton Ingram House along with a beaded handbag and shoes.
