 | | "Thomas Rowland Sitting in Front of His House at 552 Pilottown Road." Oil on board. Late nineteenth century. Gift of Robert G. Stewart, 2003. 2003.26.3 © The Lewes Historical Society |
One of the Society's newest acquisitions, this gift of Robert G. Stewart of Lewes, depicts Thomas Rowland sitting in front of his home at 552 Pilottown Road. It is a delightful piece with bold brushstrokes and depicts Mr. Rowland under tree facing out over what was then Lewes Creek and now is the Lewes & Rehoboth Canal. The house still exists, however, the porch has been removed. It is by an unknown artist.
The gift also included a daguerreotype of Sarah Lees Art, a page from the Rowland family Bible with genealogical information dating the late 18th century, a set of six coin silver spoons by Warrington (1811-1833) engraved with the initial "JSR" for James and Sarah Rowland and a nineteenth century copy of Shankland's 1773 map of Pilottown Road and the Rowland properties that lined the northwest end of that road.
The Society is extremely appreciative of Mr. Stewart's generosity.
