Lewes' 375th Anniversary!
Selected Archival Collections

1971.8 - The James Goss Collection. A collection of photographs detailing the construction of the National Harbor of Refuge Breakwater and the completion of the Delaware Breakwater.

1977.2 - The Colonel Riley E. McGarraugh Photographic Collection. Comprised of nearly 29,000 photographic negatives and prints, this collection documents all facets of life in Lewes and the surrounding region between c. 1955 - c. 1974.

1980.2 - The George Nocito Collection - Lewes Study. Photographic and written survey undertaken between 1972 and 1974 by Dr. George Nocito of the University of Delaware looking at the issues of changing architectural and aesthetic styles in a small, rural, coastal town.

1986.1 - Records of the Petition to Acknowledge Swanendael as a National Historic Landmark. One of the early projects of the Society was to work for National Landmark recognition of the original Dutch colony at the Swanendael site. The Society worked in conjunction with the Sussex Society for Archaeology and History.

1995.1 - Everett Bryan Photographs in the Collection of Hazel D. Brittingham. Over 300 images of Lewes in the mid- to late-1920s and 30s.

2001.14 - Records of the Friends of the Fisher-Martin House, Inc. The efforts of the Friends to relocate and restore the house of one Delaware's most famous chart-makers. The structure currently serves as the home of the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau.

2002.13 - Records of Lightship LV 118/WAL 539. Lewes' current Lightship Overfalls, previously Pollock's Rip, Cornfield and Boston. Vessel acquired by The Lewes Historical Society in 1974 and transferred to Overfalls Maritime Museum Foundation in 2001.

2002.11 - The Jack W. Hill Collection. A member of a distinguished Lewes seafaring family, Jack Hill worked at the Lewes Lighthouse Depot.

2002.25 - The William F. Mai Papers. A graduate of Lewes High School and the world's leading plant nematologist, Dr. Mai's scientific papers and biography shed light on one of Lewes' favorite sons.

2002.28.42 - The Estella Beebe Frazer Genealogical Papers. Mrs. Frazer, a life-long Lewes resident, documented the history of her family in excquisite detail. Her father and uncle founded Beebe Hospital (now Beebe Medical Center) and other members of her family were sea captians, lighthouse keepers and Lewes school teachers.

2004.4 - Elizabeth Harrington Macdonald Papers. Elizabeth Harrington Macdonald was an avid researcher and extensively studied Lewes' 18th and 19th century maritime history. Her papers include Lewes-built sailing vessels, Lewes-born sailors, and information on the Delaware Pilots.

2005.6 - The James Creggar Delaware Lighthouse Collection. Photographic collection of Delaware River & Bay aids to navigation from the Capes to Trenton including several coastal New Jersey lights and Fenwick Island Lighthouse.

Lewes Educational Institutions. From the Quaker School to the Register House to the realignment of Cape Henlopen School District in 2003, Lewes was home to several of the nation's earliest academic institutions including one of the first all-girls school. Many records, ephemera and other documentation are cataloged here.
