Scope & Content Notes

Elizabeth Harrington Macdonald (EHM) was a prominent female Delaware artist of the 20th century and was an avid avocational historian. Her area of interest lay in Lewes’ maritime past and she devoted years of research constructing lists and specifications of Lewes-built sailing vessels of the 1700s and 1800s. She also gathered information on Lewes-born seamen of the 1800s based on applications for sea protection against impressment. Both these subjects drew heavily on work at the National Archives. EHM also worked with the Pilots’ Association for the Bay & River Delaware in building inventories of pilot boats, their crews and time periods from the 1700s and 1800s as well as miscellaneous information regarding the Association, particularly the building of the pilot boat Delaware in 1929.

Some vessels built at or near Bethel, Delaware are also listed as an area in that vicinity is known as Lewisville and were incidentally included.

Appraisal & Arrangement Notes

Both appraisal and arrangement were conducted March, 2004. 3x5 notecards were photocopied to acid free paper and discarded. Mrs. Macdonald arranged her work in three broad categories: Lewes-built vessels, Lewes-born seamen’s records and Delaware Bay pilot boats.

This original arrangement has been respected and is reflected in the following container list.
