The Lewes Historical Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and interpreting Lewes’ rich heritage, has identified a need to document and better understand Lewes’ historic cemeteries and burial yards. The project intends to document each stone in each cemetery prior to 1950, provide an image of each stone, and to look at how the cemeteries develop through both space and time to learn more about funerary customs and art, socio-economic relationships and familial inter-relationships. No excavation is involved. E. Michael DiPaolo, the Society’s Executive Director, has degrees in archaeology and library science and is the lead researcher on this project. Lewes and the Society provide a beautiful and professional atmosphere in which to work. Using the best research methods and technology available, the Society intends to eventually publish this research for scholarly use and as a matter of public record in the Lewes area of both well- and little-known historic cemeteries. Interested students must be enrolled at an accredited four-year college or university, be an undergradute having completed at least one year of study and have a major area of study or interest in history, archaeology, public history or library science. There is a $3,000.00 stipend for the summer and the Society will ensure living arrangements for the intern in Lewes. The Lewes Historical Society is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate in regard to age, sex, race, creed, national origin, disability, handicap, sexual orientation, or political affiliation.
