THE LEWES HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Summer 2008 Internship
Lewes & Rehoboth Hundred Cemetery Research

The Lewes Historical Society, through the financial support of the Jessie Ball duPont Fund of Jacksonville, Fla., is seeking applicants for an internship position assisting in cemetery documentation and research in Lewes & Rehoboth Hundred, Sussex County, Delaware. The Internship is open to all undergraduates with preference given to majors in history, art history, archaeology, or library science; exposure/experience with GIS and databases is important but not required. The internship at The Lewes Historical Society is designed not only to focus on cemetery research and cataloging, but also to offer students a chance to see what work in public history is like and hopefully to encourage students to follow a career in museums, libraries, or other public history fields.

During this project, the intern will spend some time on-site in burial yards, documenting each stone and entering each into a database. No excavation will be conducted. Ultimately, this research and inventory will be published by The Lewes Historical Society; compilation and organization of research data for publication will continue in 2008; the intern can expect to contribute a great deal to that effort. Research in eighteenth and nineteenth century funerary art, genealogy, and church history as well as extrapolating trends from the data will be a major component of the 2008 internship. Interacting with the public regarding the project including assisting with the Society's "Stones 'n' Bones" cemetery educational program is expected. At the end of the summer, the intern will present a paper to the Executive Director detailing his or her experience and research. Internship dates are flexible and can be worked around your school’s academic calendar.

With a history dating back to 1631, the Lewes area is rich in history and has many church and family cemeteries, some of which are well known and some of which are poorly documented or unknown.

There is a $3,500.00 stipend for the summer and the Society will ensure living arrangements for the intern in Lewes. The Lewes Historical Society is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate in regard to age, sex, race, creed, national origin, disability, handicap, sexual orientation, or political affiliation.
