Unless otherwise noted, all programs take place at Lewes Presbyterian Church on Kings Highway (parking lot available off Franklin Avenue) and begin at 7:30 PM.

Much has changed and evolved since Dr. James Marvel established the Lewes Historical Society in 1962. Past presidents Judy Roberts, George Elliott, Ed Patchell to name a few were part of the growth and the evolution of the LHS and what it has become today. Michael DiPaolo will present a look back and a look ahead.

The Cape May-Lewes Ferry History Project, Fred Coldren
The Cape May-Lewes Ferry is preparing for its 50th anniversary and is seeking items of interest to put together a historical display to mark this event in 2014.

The Nanticoke People: The History of the Powwow, Jean Norwood
The Nanticoke PowPow marked its 30th anniversary in September. Its long and successful history is the result of many members of the tribe giving much time and effort to promote the ways of the native American Indian.

Bring your favorite hors d'oeuvres or Christmas munchies to the Lewes Library Community Room. The Society will provide the wassail and we may even do a bit of Christmas caroling.

Delaware Lighthouses and Range Lights, Judith Roales
In her book on Images of America "Delaware Lighthouses and Range Lights" Judigh Roales talks about the wide variety of land-based signals that once were common sights along coastal Delaware. She will discuss these lights, their keepers and how they contributed to maritime safety along the coast.

The Role of African American Women in America, Clara Small
When you think of the historical role of African-American women, all too often it's the stereotyped images of the "mammy," "the promiscuous woman," or the "strong black woman." This presentation examines the changing role of African-American women in American society from the colonial era to the present day. Discussion will include African-American women who stepped out of the traditional role of nurturer and homemaker, by highlighting individuals such as Phyllis Wheatley, Harriet Tubman, Ida B. Wells, and Rosa Parks.

Collecting History - 4th Annual Collectors' Corner, Society Members
Collecting is a pastime many folks enjoy. HIstoric collections take on a nostalgic flavor that stirs memories and inspires you to search your house for a particular item of yesteryear or even to start your own collection. This will be an interactive meeting. Members will bring an item or a few items from their own historic collections (No Beanie Babies, please) and tell a little bit about them and how they got started.

The Great Storm of 1962, Tony Pratt
The devastating hurricane that ripped up the Atlantic coastline in 1962 turned Lewes, Rehoboth and neighboring coastal towns upside down. DNREC has produced a video that looks at the havoc the storm created. It includes interviews with many people who experienced the destruction of this 100-year storm.

Archeological History Month: Avery's Rest, Craig Lukezic
Plaster fragments may be commonplace for houses in the 20th century, but it's indicative of a very high-style house in the 17th century. So, where are the foundations that held of these fancy walls? The state archeologists will discuss some interesting finds such as an iron-headed hoe and a pair of scissors, along with two bronze buckles. There are many mysteries with few answers.
