Lewes, Del. -- The Lewes Historical Society is pleased to present "Recent Acquisitions 2005-2006" at the Peninsula Gallery, located on Savannah Rd at the Beacon Motel on Lewes Beach. The exhibit will run through February 25.
This is a first for the Society in mounting an external exhibit of its collections and certainly is exciting to share with the community some of the important and beautiful pieces it has been able to acquire over the past two years.
"We are very grateful to Tony and Carol Boyd-Heron for allowing the Society to utilize their space for two weeks," said Society Executive Director, Mike DiPaolo. "Being able to share some of our recent acquisitions will help the community understand that our mission is to collect, preserve and share Lewes's past -- whether that's colonial history or something that happened yesterday."
The pieces represent a wide age range and stretch from the 1780s through the 1960s, reflecting the breadth of Lewes's heritage. Of course, the Society couldn't mount such an exhibit without the generousity of members of the community who donate pieces that mean so much to the heritage of the town. "The Society looks at itself as the memory of Lewes," DiPaolo remarked, "we collect papers, art, artifact, photographs, books and other material that represent our community so that they can be preserved, shared and passed down to future generations. We are continually on the look out for collections that will help enrich the story of Lewes's past."
DiPaolo stated that the Society receives approximately 1,500 pieces each year -- ranging from library materials, photographs, art, and artifacts.
Some of the pieces on exhibit include correspondence from Caesar Rodney, Thomas McKean and John Dickinson, paintings by Steve Rogers, Howard Schroeder and Jack Lewis, paintings of Delaware Bay schooners and tugs, and eighteenth century renditions of the Cape Henlopen Lighthouse, among others. Perhaps one of the most unusual pieces on display is a c. 1939 card table produced by the Zwaanendael Club. On it are local business advertisements; only one local business listed - Lewes Dairy - is still in existence today.
