Lewes' 375th Anniversary!
Historic Sussex Hosts Workshop on Historic Districts & Ordinances January 30

Historic Sussex & Preservation Delaware, Inc, Will Conduct A Half-Day Workshop To Provide Information About Historic Districts - How To Create Them & How To Protect The Historic Resources Within Them. The Workshop Is Open To The Public But Will Focus On The Needs & Concerns Of Elected Officials, Planners, & Citizens Interested In Local Historic Preservation.

The Workshop Is Scheduled For Monday, JAN. 30, 2006, AT THE GEORGETOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY, 510 South Bedford Street From 8:00 AM TO 2:00 PM. Refreshments & Lunch Will Be Provided, & A Donation Of $20 Is Requested To Help Cover Costs.

According to HISTORIC SUSSEX, there is growing interest on the part of both citizens & Sussex County communities in practical but effective ways to guarantee that significant cultural & historical resources - structures, landscapes, & archeological sites - are protected from destruction or isolation as the county continues to grow & prosper. In the face of rapid & frequently inadequately planned growth, communities often destroy their historic fabric & with it the special identity their pasts created. Moreover, many places have made preservation of their historic & cultural resources the centerpiece for economic & community revitalization. Local community character & the unique sense of place it creates run a serious risk of being lost, if appropriate conservation actions are not taken. Historic districts & preservation ordinances are among the chief actions communities take to afford such protection.

HISTORIC SUSSEX is a coalition of town & city historical societies, museums, historic sites & citizens committed to historic preservation education & advocacy within Sussex County & is affiliated with Preservation Delaware, the state's not-for-profit preservation organization.

Timothy Slavin, Delaware's Director of Historical & Cultural Affairs will lead off the workshop, & his presentation will be followed by two panels, one composed of Sussex County citizens who will discuss the historic district experiences of Bridgeville, Lewes, & Milton. The second panel will consist of three very knowledgeable experts: Adrian Fine of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Robin Bodo of the DE Division of Historical & Cultural Affairs, & Professor Tom Reed of the Widener University School of Law, who will present on the details & practical aspects of historic districts & the various kinds of ordinances that communities adopt to protect them.

Active audience participation will be encouraged. There will be ample time for questions & discussion, & suggestions for follow-up programs will be solicited.

THOSE WISHING TO PARTICIPATE SHOULD SEND A CHECK FOR $20 WITH INFORMATION ABOUT HOW THEY CAN BE CONTACTED TO THE GEORGETOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY, 510 SOUTH BEDFORD ST,, GEORGETOWN, DE, 19947.

SPACE IS LIMITED, & ATTENDEES ARE ASKED TO REGISTER EARLY SO THAT PROPER ARRANGEMENTS CAN BE MADE.
