Lewes' 375th Anniversary!
LHS Celebrates Black History Month with Underground Railroad Presentation

Willis Phelps will describe life on Delaware's Underground Railroad Friday Feb. 20th at 7:30 PM at St. Peter's Church Hall in Lewes.
The story of the Underground railroad is one of the most moving in American history. Thousands of slaves were assisted to freedom by conductors or pilots along the route -- these individuals and families would offer safe refuge, food and a chance to have a safe night's sleep on the journey north.

Willis Phelps, a first person interpretor from Wilmington, will join The Lewes Historical Society at its February 20 meeting at 7:30 PM at St. Peter's Church Hall, Second and Mulberry Streets for a stirring interpretation of life on Delaware’s Underground Railroad. The title of Phelps's program is the Trackless Train. Phelps will portray Harry Graige, an ordinary man in Wilmington, Del. who risked his own life to help slaves find freedom. Phelps last visited the Lewes Historical Society in 2002 when he gave a first person interpretation of a buffalo soldier durign the Civil War.

The meeting is free and open to the public; light refreshments will be served following the meeting. The Lewes Historical Society is a non-profit membership-based organization that was founded in 1962 to preserve and share Lewes's rich heritage. Make sure to mark your calendar for this stirring story that will help to honor Black History Month! For more information please call 302-645-7670.
