Lewes Historic Preservation Week

The Historic Preservation Workshop hosted by the Society and sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation held on May 17 was attended by 30 interested and engaged participants. Here, Barbara Warnell of Lewes completes an activity by designing a structure that would not fit in with the aesthetic of its neighborhood.
  • Lewes Preservation Week: May 12 - May 17
  • Historic Preservation Workshop: May 17
  • Cape Artist's Display: May 12 - August 30, Ryves Holt House - Lewes Then & Now, Again: A look at Lewes' most enduring buildings and vistas, past and present.

The Lewes Historical Society is proud to work with the City of Lewes in declaring the Week of May 12, 2003 as Lewes Historic Preservation and History Week. The week coincides with the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Historic Preservation Week.

Activities for the week include press releases about the meaning of historic preservation, a display at the Ryves Holt House of Cape Artists paintings of some of Lewes' most historic houses, tours around Lewes to Shields Elementary and Lewes Middle School students who will then create brochures and websites about some of Lewes' most famous landmarks, and a historic preservation workshop jointly sponsored by the Society, the National Trust, the Delaware State Historic Preservation Office and Preservation Delaware.

The workshop will consist of speakers, hands-on and interactive activities, and a tour of the Cannonball House, one of Lewes' most famous landmarks. There is a $10 fee for the workshop. A free reception will follow beginning at St. Peter's for a brief slide presentation on other preservation districts around the country and then moving to the Historic Complex for hors d'eourves.

For more information, please contact the Society at 302-645-7670.
