2022 In Review - Net Reel and Ryves Holt House Projects

Submitted by Michael Schupp, Director of Buildings and Grounds

2022 was a busy year for the Society's Facilities and Grounds efforts.  Director Mike Schupp and the facilities and grounds staff have been busy working on preservation efforts at the Ryves Holt House.  Extensive improvements have been made to restore the structure's exterior, including total roofing replacement, chimney repair, scraping and replacement of a portion of the cedar shake siding, gutter installation, painting, and installation of reproduction cedar shutters.

Efforts have since turned to interior improvements including the shop area, electrical upgrades throughout the structure, and a new HVAC installation, for future use, on the second floor. The refurbished shop is expected to open in spring 2023.

The Menhaden Net Reel was also brought back to the forefront of the Facilities and Grounds agenda as contracts were secured to prepare the reel for relocation in order to comply with a new City of Lewes ordinance.  The campus' net reel location was expanded, irrigation relocated, new footings were poured, and the reel moved back 10' 1" to its current location along the Third Street frontage.

All of this, along with routine grounds & facilities maintenance, a profitable holiday greens sale for future plantings, and the historic fence repairs at the front of the property are just a few of the major tasks and accomplishments made through our group of talented and dedicated staff & volunteers!

By reaching these goals the year has ended on a very positive note, and Director Schupp credits a great team of employees, volunteers, and selected contractors to make it all possible.  "Our volunteers are an awesome group and I am fortunate  to have such a dedicated and talented group of people to work with in helping to preserve our history for generations to come."
